IRC - Game Over…

As many of you know, we have been over in Ypres, Belgium for the Intercontinental Rally Championship (IRC). Now many people may not have heard of the IRC, as for most, the word Rally or Rallying is associated with the more well known WRC. However in recent years the IRC has gone from feeder series to the WRC, to perhaps the most popular and viewed rally in the world.

Average Joes Blog was there as guests of Harry Hunt, an independent driver, originally hailing from London, England. Even though still in his early twenties, Harry has already formed a reputation within world rally as being one to watch in the future. In the 2WD class, Hunt won the IRC 2WD category in 2010, and after finding his feet last year in his new Citroen DS3, he is again leading the pack in 2012.

Ypres is one of the fastest rallies in the world, long, fast straights mean that power rules all, and as the Citroen loses some 60 BHP to his bigger rivals such as the 2WD Megane or 2WD Civic, staying on track was the name of the game, and a top 5 finish was the aim.

Things were going well on the track, very well. Up to 3rd in Classification after stage 7, and the car performing near onsong. However a worrying niggle was in the back of everyone’s mind. Between a shed load of rain and Shakedown on the Thursday night, the car had developed a fault. Seemingly not start at will, and a loss of electronic battery. Although nursed through, every service break was used to look for the problem. A new starter, alternator, relay’s, control box and everything else could cure the problem, and unfortunately at the start of stage 8, the car gave in completely. Loss of power after just a few hundred yards.

A bitter pill to swallow for Harry, Robbie and the Team, though many positives can be taken from the pace, car setup and overall position, you can’t help but wonder what might have been.

For Harry it’s Game Over, for this rally at least…

P.S A huge well done to Juho Hänninen for winning overall and Martin Kangur who won the 2WD class.
